Mau-Mau Cave – Discovered by the Mau Mau Freedom fighters
Mau Mau Cave is located near Nanyuki, about 199.2 km North East of Nairobi in Kenya’s Central Province. Mau Mau Cave was used as a hide-out by Kenyan Freedom Fighters during the Mau Mau Uprising of 1952 to 1960. The Mau Mau cave where real life African fighters once hid from British colonial government is now a tourist attraction.
Mau Mau Cave was built in secret, and the Mau Mau fighters would only bring their women to the hideout when they were in danger of being caught by the British. The cave was hidden inside a large hillside covered with dense vegetation.
There are no Mau Mau in the cave today.
Constructed out of stones and concrete roofing, the 350 square metre cave has 3 chambers which are all interconnected via narrow passageways.
The Mau Mau Cave is the only known Mau Mau hideout that has been turned into a museum, featuring weapons and ammunition used by Mau Mau fighters. It also houses several documents chronicling the uprising including two thumb-printed confessions of being fed with military secrets by high ranking government officials who were sympathetic to the cause of Mau Mau.
One of the chambers in Mau Mau Cave is dedicated to Jomo Kenyatta, who was incarcerated at Kapenguria for close to 7 years during the uprising after being suspected of masterminding it.
