Agrour Amogjar – A 690m High Peak in Mauritania
In Agrour Amogjar, the Agrour Amogjar Mountains offer shelter from the heat and wind of the Sahara Desert.
A series of six caves lie as high as 150 meters up the face of a cliff on top of Aghour Aghajer, which is what the Agrour Amogjar mountaintop is called. These natural shelters are home to some rich rock paintings.
There are hundreds of paintings in Agrour Aghajer. A majority of them are located at the bottom of Agrour
Aghajer in a series of rooms and passageways that were used for shelter in prehistoric times by hunters and gatherers. A total of 24 rock paintings have been found in Agrour Aghaje. There are paintings of humans, camels, and cows painted on the walls. Some of the rock paintings depict hunters wearing masks as they hunt game.
The rock paintings in Agrour Amogjar are deeply weathered and partially eroded.
