The Iroungou has proved to be the largest pre-colonial human burial site in Africa. Iroungou is considered to be extremely significant because it will help scientists understand the relationships between several ethnic groups of Gabon. There are similarities with other archeological sites where Iroungou objects were also discovered (for example, among Iroungou finds are metal objects of the same type as those found in Bantu populations of South Africa).

Yes! When I was in the Iroungou cave, I saw a bat crawling on the wall. It was really close to me and it scared me because I didn’t expect it to be there.

What type of animal do people see as a spirit protecting the Iroungou cave?

The Iroungou cave is said to be guarded by a snake, and many people believe that the snake is a spirit animal.
