Anjanamba Cave, South-Western Madagascar

Caves, Madagascar

Anjanamba is the name of a cave in South-Western Madagascar, Atsimo-Andrefana region, in the Mikea Forest. Anjanambalahy is the name of one of the people who occupied Anjanamba before settlers.

Anjanamba or Anjana Mboka means “the Anjana’s stone”, Anjana being Anjanamba’s first settler. Anjanamba is sometimes called Anavato Anjambahibe, meaning Anjana’s Anjanamba, or Anjama Mboka. More recently it has been known as Anavato Andrefanalambo, “Andrefana of the south”. This is an Anjana reference, Anjanamba being Anjana’s Anjanamba.

Anjanamba has been occupied by humans as early as 30,000 BP. Anjanamba was next to the Anosyenzy River and would have been a rich place for hunting animals such as hippo or crocodile. The cave is very large and contains several layers of Anjana’s people, from Anjanamba 3 up to Anjanamba 13. Anjanamba is also rich in archeological material, such as stone tool remnants and bones from extinct megafauna such as hippo, crocodile and giant lemurs.

In 1960 Anjanamba was made a Cultural Monument of Malagasy Heritage (Mémorial Culturel de l’Héritage du patrimoine malgache). Anjanamba is located in Anosibe Anjanambatia on Route Nationale 5, about 60 km from Abeoko-Befotaka and 8 km south of Mikea.

Anjanamba is a large cave with Anjana’s artifacts and Anajanamba. Anjanamba 10 has Anjana-style paintings dating from the neolithic, which means that Anjanada followed an Anjana lifestyle even after Anjana’s death.
