Amanchor Cave Located in Enugu State of Nigeria

Amanchor Cave is one of Nigeria ‘s natural heritage, containing the world’s biggest stalagmite called “Mountain of Butter”, which measures about 12 meters in height and diameter.

Amanchor Cave is located in the Etiti community of Edda, Afikpo South, in Enugu State of Nigeria . Amanchor Cave is one of Nigeria’s natural heritage, containing the world’s biggest stalagmite called “Mountain of Butter”, which measures about 12 meters in height and diameter.

Amanchor Cave is situated in the Amanchor hills which are part of the southwestern highlands of Nigeria, part of the larger Guinea zone. Amanchor hill is located at latitude 7°49’4″N (7.81724 – 7°49’4″N) and longitude 4°37’0″E (4.61668 – 4°37’0″E). Amanchor hill is a part of the larger Etiti community of Edda, Afikpo South, in Enugu State of Nigeria. Amanchor cave houses many birds and some species of bats.

Amanchor cave is close to Amanchukwu stream which is open to visitors. Amanchor cave is believed to have acted as home for Amanchukwu stream, where the river god of Amanchukwu used to reside during ancient time before moving his abode further upstream.

Amanchor hills are surrounded by other prominent hill peaks such as Amankwo, Afiokwu hills and Nkwo hill which is located at Amanchukwu stream and Amanchor cave. Amanchukwu hills form the first range of hills to be encountered as one enters Amanchor town from Etiti on the road leading to Amaokpala, Akwakuma and Amanawu towns.

The amanchor hills are located in Amanchor community of Amanchukwu, in Edda local government area in Enugu state. Amanchor is about 30km from Amanawu and 50km from Amaokpala towns to the south-east and Amanakwo which is about 32km away to the north west. Amanchor forms a boundary between Amanchukwu and Amanakwo towns, the Amanchor hills is part of the Amanchukwu hills. Amanchor town is also identified by Amanachukwu which is a shorter name for Amanchor. There exists an Amanchor primary school within Amanchor community in Amanchukwu.

The Amanchor hills are one of the prominent tourist sites in Amanchukwu as Amanchukwu tourism site Amanchor cave is a good place for bird watching and hiking. Amanchor hills scenic beauty has been well depicted in Amanchukwu tourism video which won an award at National Tourism Award presentation by Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) in 2015.

Amanchor hill is one of the Amanchukwu tourist sites along with Amanchukwu waterfalls and Amanchukwu caves which are within Amanchukwu town. Amanchor stream has become a major attraction for tourists from both home and abroad because of its proximity to Amanchor cave where it flows out from beneath the mountains. Amanchor stream is among the Amanchukwu tourism sites in Amanchor hills which are located within Amanchor community in Amanchukwu. Amanchukwu waterfall is located at Amankwo hill in Amanchukwu and Amanawu town, about 7km away from Amanchor town.

My favorite part of the Amanchor cave is the feeling of peace and stillness that I experience when I’m inside. It’s like I’m in my own little world where nothing else matters.

The cave is also incredibly beautiful, and it’s amazing how the light dances off the walls and floors. Each time I visit, I feel like I’m discovering something new about it.

What was the last animal you saw in the Amanchor cave? 

I saw a bat. They are everywhere in the cave. There are so many that it’s like they’re coating the ceiling and walls. It’s pretty amazing!

How do you think the Amanchor cave got its name? 

The Amanchor cave likely got its name from the local Aman tribe who live in the area. The Aman tribe is known for their cave paintings, which can be found throughout the region. So it’s likely that this cave was named for the paintings that are found inside of it.
