• 3DVisualizer is software designed for interactive exploration of any type of 3D gridded data sets including, but not limited to, geodynamics simulation results, seismic tomography, 3D serial-sectioning, fluid dynamics simulations, and medical tomography.
• 3DVisualizer is a proof-of-concept research application. While it isn't as polished as a commercial package, we have found it quite useful and hope you will too.
• The README file contains important information regarding installation, system requirements, and the software license.
• You must also download and install Vrui VR Toolkit before you can install and use 3DVisualizer. The source for Vrui is available below, in the download section. More information on Vrui can be found on the Vrui webpage.
• If you have trouble running 3DVisualizer, find bugs, or have suggestions, please submit e-mail to visualizer-software@keckcaves.org with the subject heading 3DVisualizer. Please do not e-mail the authors directly.
• 3DVisualizer only runs in Linux, Unix and Mac-OSX system. It does not yet run on Windows systems.

• Vrui Toolkit version: RELEASE. Vrui must be compiled and installed before compiling and installing 3DVisualizer. Please download, unpack the tar file and follow the instructions in the README.txt file, which explains how to compile and install Vrui. More information on compiling and installing Vrui can be found in the manual (see below)

• 3DVisualizer version: CURRENT RELEASE (updated on 4/23/08). This is the first release of the 3DVisualizer code. Please download, unpack the tar file and follow the instructions in the README.txt file, which explains how to compile and install 3DVisualizer. More information on compiling, installing, using and configuring 3DVisualizer can be found in the manual (see below).

• User Manual for Desktop Environment: A pdf file that provides instructions on how to install, use and configure 3DVisualizer. This manual includes examples using output model data from the CIG finite element codes CitcomS and CitcomCU (see note below on UCD format of CitcomCU model output). Some other CIG software formats are also support (e.g., GALE), as well as VTK legacy format, a generic ASCII format, and more.

• UCD output format for CitcomCU (tarfile): Because finite element output data written in ASCII takes up a lot of memory and loses accuracy, we have written a modified version of the Output.c file in the CitcomCU-1.0.2 release. The tar-file includes the modified file, called Output_ucd.c, instructions for modifying the CitcomCU source code to call the modified output functions, and a description of the output format, which is directly readable by 3DVisualizer.

• Test data (tarfile): We provide an example data for a simple simulation of a vertically sinking slab calculated using CitcomCU (using the UCD output format, see above). Instructions for how to load this test data are provided in the manual.

Three movies demonstrating 3DVisualizer being used in a CAVE environment and a desktop are provided to introduce the user to abilities and use to 3DVisualizer. These movies include voiceover, which describes how the user uses the mouse and button keys to interact with the data. We recommend watching the desktop movie before using the program on the data set. Once the user becomes familiar with the basic idea of how to use dynamic windows and dynamics tool assignment, then the manual provides a good reference of the available visualization options.
