Tensor data, such as stress and strain distributions, are heterogeneously distributed in the earth and experimental samples and are critical to shaping deformation patterns. Although tensor data can be straightforward to mathematically model, difficulties in visualization of tensors in space (e.g. stress shadows and halos around compositional or structural heterogeneities) currently limits interpretations of the processes controlling tensor data. The Keck CAVES would allow researchers to watch temporal changes of objects (such as 3-D spheroids) distributed in 3-D space, providing unparalleled insights into the processes shaping tensor data. |
