Microbialites (rocks influenced by microbial growth when they formed) provide some of the earliest evidence of life on Earth. However, ancient microbialites rarely preserve microfossils and are often too geochemically altered to provide signatures of microbial metabolism. Thus, microbialite morphology is often the only indicator of possible past life, and it provides clues to both biological and environmental processes. Refined interpretations of morphology can substantially improve our underst…

The task of a virtual reality (VR) development toolkit is to shield an application developer from the particular configuration of a VR environment, such that applications can be developed quickly and in a portable and scalable fashion. Three important parts of this overarching goal are encapsulation of the display environment, encapsulation of the distribution environment, and encapsulation of the input device environment. Please see the Vrui development page for more details.

Crusta is a virtual globe developed by a computer science graduate student working closely with students in geology who defined the needs, tested the code, and suggested additional features. Crusta combines:

	* representation of global, high-resolution surface data,
	* visualization of these data on a real-time virtual globe,
	* efficient exploration and annotation using real-time interactive software tools.
